Where Does Rainwater Go?
Have you ever wondered where rainwater goes after it hits your roof, yard, driveway, and streets? In case you did not know, it flows into storm sewers and directly to our rivers and Lake Erie untreated. The water that enters the storm sewers does not go to a wastewater treatment plant. Any pollutants or litter that collects in the stormwater will end up in Lake Erie, where we get our drinking water and where we swim in the summer. Do your part to keep Lake Erie clean and follow these guidelines:
· Never dump grass clippings, oil, or other wastes in storm drains along the streets.
· Try not to over fertilize your lawn or use too many pesticides.
· Wash your car on the lawn or take it to a commercial car wash.
· Fix leaks from your car.
· Install a rain barrel or rain garden to collect rainwater on your property.
No one wants to swim in or drink dirty water. Keep the waters of Lake Erie Clean for everyone! For more information, contact the Lake County Stormwater Management Department at 350-5900 or www.lakecountyohio.gov/smd.
